On Sunday, August 25, 2002, twelve new trees were planted along the new greenway near the First Street trailhead. Local Girl Scout troop 3415 planted the trees through a cooperative venture with the Red River Watershed Association (RRWA), and the Springfield City Parks and Recreation Department.
After proposing the project to the Steering Committee of the RRWA, the girls met with the Springfield Parks and Recreation Department to determine if the trees could be planted along the greenway. The entire process, from designing and presenting both proposals to actually planting and watering the trees, helps the girls to fulfill their community service oriented Bronze Award. In addition to this community service project, troop 3415 has partnered with the RRWA in a past stream clean-up.

The trees, donated by the Red River Watershed Association, are Tulip Poplars, the state tree of both Tennessee and Kentucky. The area that makes up the Red River's watershed lies in both states and encompasses approximately 1,482 square miles stretching east from White House, TN, to several miles west of Clarksville, TN, and North from Russellville, KY, to Greenbrier, TN at the Southern border.
